I thought I forgot something…
Yesterday was a strange day.
I dont have a reminder set up to make a blog post. I normally find time to do the post and it happens. Whoops.
So ends a 215 day streak.of blogging every day. I dont feel bad about that. I will continue to blog regularly. I feel more dumb for letting the day get away from me and not getting a post up.
What I will likely do going forward is drop almost first thing in the morning. This means it will be out of the way and I won’t forget since it will be done when I get up. Since I wasn’t setting a reminder or doing the blog on a schedule, there were times I would almost forget and do it very late at night.
We are starting all over at day 1 with this streak. These.things happen. I won’t beat myself up over this. Simply keep going forward. I’m human. I make mistakes.
Until next time!

Almost-Super Heroes book 2: Flight!

I was going to tell a little story today, but since I’m a complete goofball, I had forgotten to upload ASH2: Flight. Yes, yes, the summer got away from me and though I meant for this book to release tomorrow, I needed to get it uploaded and Amazon wouldn’t let me do a pre-order for a short time and, surprise! It went live sometime last night.
That said, I’m excited to report that people noticed as I’ve already sold 2 copies and someone also picked up ASH1: Escape. This is totally unexpected. I mean, yeah, I’ve been hopeful that people would organically discover that I have new books appear, but so far, I’ve had to push and push and push to get one or two sales.
That said, no, I’m not ready to start advertising yet. I want to have more book under my belt and keep the flow going before I do that. I will, eventually, begin to advertise, but I don’t feel right now.
This is a great time to point out the milestone we’ve hit here. This book marks the half-way mark of the story arc we’re in. Confused? Yeah, me too.
We have 2 V&A Shipping books, 2 GRPC books, and now 2 ASH books. That’s 6 books in this entire storyline that will move into a military sci-fi series. All of these 4 series will have 4 books. I’m still thinking about how I need to alert readers that all these books tie together.
My initial plan is to put the 1st chapter of the next book to read at the end of each book. This will give a little bonus content as well as pointing the reader in the right direction. Yes, a person could read each series individually before moving on to the next series. There may be minor spoilers.
I feel I’m rambling, because this isn’t the post I intended to write today. This was supposed to be tomorrow’s post. If you made it this far, check out the latest. I started re-reading it and had to stop myself…4 chapters in LoL. This book is fun and I feel my writing is getting better with each book. Please, tell me if I’m wrong.
Hyperbole and a Half: A Review
A long time ago, someone (I don’t remember who) posted (I don’t remember where) one of the longer sections/comics from this book about depression. Much like Jenny Lawson, Allie Brosh suffers from mental illness including depression. Also, like Jenny, Allie deals with her condition via humor. She also has a penchant for animals no one else could possibly want.
I’d long forgotten who had draw/written the cartoon I’d read until I was half-way through this book and ran across it. I’m glad I picked up this book (and I will pick up the sequel). There were several parts where I laughed out loud at the absurdity of what Allie wrote about and could entirely envision her doing these things.
I’m sure there’s embellishment here and there throughout the book, but the stories feel grounded in reality.
One of my favorite artistic details of the book is how each story is on a different color paper. Makes me want to display the book on my shelf backward. I’ll always know what book it is. It also helped me assess how much longer it’d take to get to the next story and if I wanted to begin another (I almost always did).
If you’re looking for something to tickle your funny bone while addressing important issues, like dogs and mental health, this is a wonderful book.
Major boating incident on Fiesta Island
There is a video in this post where some people describe what happened. There is blood in the video on the boat. Note that all involved are alive and there aren’t life-threatening injuries. The injuries are severe, but no one will die as a result of what happened. If you’re not squeamish, watch the video, otherwise, skip it. Below is my recall of the events that happened.
Today we were walking the dogs on Fiesta Island. It’s a beautiful place to walk dogs. The weather was wonderful and I never realized how large the area is for walking dogs. My Favorite Daughter, Hijo, My Favorite nephew and niece, My sister-in-law, the Mrs, and Mathew were all walking and playing with all the dogs we’d brought as well as all the dogs that decided to join our party.
Around the back side, we split up. The Mrs, SiL, and I were on top of the ridge and the others were walking along the beach. The area we were walking along was next to an area where there is supposed to be one boat and one boat only that’s for water skiing. There’ve been a number of accidents in this area which is why there’s a restriction. We saw a boat going out from the area with a water skiier slaloming through the bouys. Obviously an experienced skiier. From where they were departing, there was a lot of yelling. I’d thought it was people yelling at an inflatable craft that was apparently stuck in the water ski area. As I said, an area the inflatable should never had been in. A man was paddling the boat trying to get out of there. There was a motor, but the man must have run out of gas.
From what I found out later, the people on the shore were not yelling at the man in the inflatable, they were yelling at the jet ski boat to stop and give those people, who’d run out of gas, time to get to shore or help them to shore. It was an older man with his wife and kid. They’d made a mistake and were in the wrong place trying to get out of the way as best they could.
The woman driving the boat didn’t seem to care. The man water skiiing, didn’t seem to care.
When the made their return run, the inflatable was in their way. It was obvious they couldn’t get out of the way and were doing what they could. About 200 or 300 feet away, the woman driving the boat started to honk her horn as if the man paddling could get out of their way. She didn’t slow, didn’t veer, just stayed the course.
The man on the skis could have seen the inflatable. He had to have known the boat was there from their first run. By this time, EVERYONE on the both sides was watching what was going on. The horn had everyone’s attention. Many people on the beach yelled and yelled for the boat to stop.
They didn’t.
The man on the skis continued his slalom run which brought his tow rope over the inflatable. I don’t know if this was deliberate, an accident, or what. All I know is the rope landed on the inflatable, slack. The man grabbed the child and ducked under the rope. They were safe. The woman? The rope went taught and slashed up and across her face. She went down in the boat. There was a lot of blood. The man sat up and screamed “What have you done! What did you do! Someone call 9-1-1! Help!”
Honestly, I thought the woman was dead. The child began to cry. My heart stopped.
This entire series of events was preventable by the people water skiing. At any point the could have powered down the boat. Stopped. And all of this wouldn’t have happened. I don’t know if it was their plan to scare the people, flip their boat, or what they were thinking. All I know, it was entirely preventable. There were many witnesses. You can hear a retelling of the events in the video. We were horrified.
Thankfully, the Mrs, and SiL didn’t see what happened. I thought I’d seen a woman killed. The woman was not. She suffered “severe, non-life-threatening facial injuries.” She will live. We saw her struggle to sit up in the boat. There’s nothing worse than a feeling of helplessness watching someone suffer.
The man continued to try and paddle to shore, but you could hear him crying. The child crying.
The woman in the water ski boat did stop. She went over the the skier and took him over to the inflatable craft. The man held onto the inflatable and they towed them to shore.
By this time, many people had tried to call 9-1-1. I tried to call, got patched through to harbor police and got a busy signal. Before I could hang, up, sirens were already on their way. Before the boats reached the shore, two harbor police showed up. A firetruck arrived, multiple police, and an ambulance arrived before they reached the shore.
Now, everything else that happened, took place on the opposite shore from where we were. We saw the man and child get out of the inflatable. Harbor police escorted the man and woman who caused the accident to a dock in the middle of the area before taking them to shore for questioning (I’m assuming here). The woman hit by the tow rope was placed on a gurney and loaded into the ambulance and taken away. I’m not sure, but I think the man and child also rode with her in the ambulance.
While that was going on, a man, that you’ll see in the video, was yelling at the water skier and the woman driving the boat that everything that happened was their fault and he saw everything. That he’d make sure the police knew exactly what they’d done. He shouted at them all the way from our side until he arrived where the police were. I don’t blame him for being angry. I think many of us were in shock over what occurred.
When we finished our walk and left, there were still police vehicles there. The man and woman were still there. The inflatable was still there. I can only be thankful that no one died on the water after the events that happened. If you didn’t watch the video, the woman driving the boat is in the background asking why she can’t get her things off the boat, which, again, is parked in the middle of the water.
I don’t know what’ll happen. I don’t claim to know the laws. I don’t know the state of the woman taken to the hospital. If I find more information online, I will add it to this post.
I wasn’t going to write this up, but I needed to get these events out of my head. I hope if you’re ever in a situation where you can prevent an accident before you cause it, you think about the human lives that may be at stake. The people water skiing may have been annoyed by the inflatable ruining their good time, but that’s no excuse to put anyone’s life at risk like that.
A day with the Mrs.
Today the Mrs and I spent the day together. We accomplished some much-needed shopping. Had a wonderful lunch, and watched a couple of movies together. I finished a book that I will give to My Favorite Daughter and I will review that book tomorrow.
Speaking of MFD, she is here with the boy. Tomorrow we all will be getting up early to spend some time at the beach with their doggies.
Speaking of doggies, we are still on the hunt. We are still seeking a shelter dog and, oddly, it has been a challenge. Hopefully we will have good news next week.
Strange Strangers.
![VIDEO] Nine Perfect Strangers Trailer: Nicole Kidman Series Adaptation | TVLine](https://tvline.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/nine-perfect-strangers-key-art.jpg)
Tonight the Mrs asked me if I wanted to watch a comedy movie. At least, that’s what I heard. It’s got Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy. Whelp, I like both those actresses, so why not. We’ve been watching too much news lately, so we should watch something together.
First, we had to sign up for a free month of Hulu. Install the app on the Fire TV. Then we could search on Nine Perfect Strangers.
Yes, it has both Melissa and Nicole. There’s also a wonderful supporting cast. I did, however, notice when I started the “movie” that it was Season 1: Episode 1. Well, I’m still in. Seems like it could be funny as McCarthy is hilarious.
No. There are funny parts in the three episodes we watched. It’s not a comedy. This show is dark in tone, but beautiful cinematography. The banter between the cast is great. The content, though, is far from what I was expecting.
Let’s set this up. Nine guests are on their way to a “resort”. All are headed there for different reasons. Some know it’s expensive, but worth it. One family is on there way for help and therapy. There’s a millionaire who made his money winning the lotto. An Instagram influencer. A writer (McCarthy). An ex-football player who’s injuries have put him out to pasture.
Then there’s Kidman who runs the facility with a staff of either 3 or 4. I keep losing count. I think it’s four. Their relationship with each other isn’t the same around the guests as it is in private. So much is going on behind the scenes.
I won’t go into more detail as this show is only 3 episodes in and, darn it, now I’m hooked and I have to wait a week for the next episode. Guess I’ll need to go read a book.

Speed Cube!
When in Florida, my nephew, JQ, helped me relearn the Rubik’s Cube. I’ve had one for years and had long forgotten the patterns to solve it.
I first learned how to solve a cube when I was 12 or 13. I’d gotten a cube and a book for Christmas one year. It grabbed me like many kids my age when the cube came out. It was a mystery. It was a challenge. Filled with so many possible combinations.
I struggled to learn the cube. To master it. Young me struggled to learn from a book. Yes, I read that book over and over. I carried that book and cube with me to school and worked on solving that sucker. I’d get called the usual names as I tried to divine how to solve the cube.
Then I was sitting in a hallway with a classmate waiting for something. He asked to see my cube and quickly solved it. What? Like that?
Over the next several minutes, he showed me the patterns I was missing to solve the cube. Having someone sitting there made solving the cube so much easier. I couldn’t believe I was able to solve the cube.
I started solving it over and over and over. I got faster and faster. Soon I wasn’t just a geek with a cube. I could solve it fast. Faster than the person who’d taught me. My faster time was 58 seconds. I’ve, honestly, never timed myself again.
Until today.
With my current cube, I can solve the cube in just under 2 minutes. 1:58. The cube I have is stiff. It squeaks and feels like I’m about to break it as I turn the sides and they get caught and stick. I’ve had trouble turning the sides and solving it fast.
When I was younger, the solution to this issue was vasiline. You’d take the cube apart, lube everything, and put it back together. Yes, it’d be slippery. That wasnt the point. It moved smoother and easier making solving it faster easier.
I’m not about to grease up a cube.
What I did, instead, was buy a speed cube. I’ve already noticed many difference. The inside edges are rounded so they dont catch on each other easily and if they do, the slide apart easily. That’s because inside the cube is a sphere and each piece is attached with flexible connectors.
Wow. I wish I had this cube when I was younger.
With all that, one thing to note. This cube isn’t easier, yet, for me to work with. It moves so easily, that I find myself losing control of the cube and have dropped it several times. I know, with practice and handling, my times will start to drop. I haven’t timed myself with it, but can’t wait to see how it goes.
I’m very thankful for my nephew for reintroducing me to cubing. It’s been a fun distraction. Being that it only takes a couple of minutes to solve, it isn’t a major distraction.
Until Next Time!
Stay Awesome!
Tomorrow…
Yes, I know the bit about “tomorrow never gets here”. I know it all too well. Tomorrow I get back on track with getting up super early and doing my workout in the morning so I’ll have the afternoon free to get things done that I’m procrastinating on.
The Mrs and I continue out doggy search. I’ll keep you posted.
I realize now I didn’t tell you that the next short story is live:
What do you do when you’re trying to get back on track?
Why, you spend all day looking at dogs and puppies, both online, and at shelters. We still haven’t found one to bring home yet and it was heart-wrenching not to bring them ALL home. We have very specific needs with the new dog we’d like to adopt and we’re doing our best. Obviously, more news to come on this soon.
In other news, I finally bit the bullet and switched over the Chrome both at work and on my home PC. There were some minor issues with FireFox that became annoyances and I’d need to use Chrome to work around those issues. I figured, I’ll just stop using FireFox and see how Chrome fills that gap. More updates on this as well.
Still getting back into the swing of things.
Today was a “normal” day back to work. Friday was a catch-up day going through email and getting an update on all the projects. It’s going to be a busy week at work.
I also got back to exercising. One step at a time on getting back to my routine. I’m also getting back to my blogging routine. My blogging might change and I’ll let you know when that happens. You might notice before I tell you anything as it will be fairly evident what I’m doing.
Speaking of what I’m doing, I let 200 days of blogging daily pass by without making mention of it. We’ll celebrate on 250. How’s that sound?
For getting back to writing, I’ll do that very soon. I have many words in my head and I’m getting myself back into my routine first. Words will happen. Oh, yes, yes they will.
